Sensitive skin is a heightened intolerance to topical products or external factors.  The types of sensitive skin are: 

  • Rosacea
  • impaired barrier function,
  • atopic dermatitis
  • psoriasis

Rosacea is a chronic sensitive skin condition often involving inflammation of the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead.  This condition sufferers may experience sensitivity, excessive flushing, persistent redness, broken capillaries, or breakouts.

  • Is seen more frequently in women aged 30-50; but affects more men.
  • Participating in any activity or behavior that causes general flushing may trigger get red easier and remain red longer, activities like exercise, steam, stress, etc.
  • Dry skin and barrier dysfunction are common.  Not addressing dryness or dehydration the symptoms of rosacea will worsen.

Rosacea subtypes:

  • Flushing and persistent redness of the central third of the face, typically with visible telangiectasias.
  • Persistent redness of the central third of the face accompanied by papules and pustules.
  • Thickening of the skin, irregular surface nodularity and enlargement; most presented as enlargement of the nose, but may affect other locations such as the chin.
  • Irritation of the eye area, including watery, bloodshot eyes, foreign body sensation, burning, stinging, dryness, itching as result of conjunctivitis or irregularity of the eyelid margins.
